How to make natural Woodapple Jam

Vish/Home Cooking

Woodapple is fruit of the common man grown in abundance here in Sri Lanka. The ripe woodapple takes on a dark brown color. Another way to find out whether the fruit is ripe is to shake it. When it is ripped you can eat it with sugar. The unripe woodapple is brilliant as a pickle (achcharu)with a bit of chilly powder, sugar and a pinch of salt. Woodapple is wonderful in so many ways.

Woodapple is an underutilized fruit, having many health benefits. It is a natural source of antioxidants.

These ripe woodapple fruits are best for consumption and preservation. Ripe woodapples can be used to prepare fresh fruit juice or can be preserved by making woodapple jam. The method of preparation is very easy.

This thick sweet concoction is absolutely ambrosial on bread, roti or anything else as a spread with a bit of butter.

For me, woodapple jam brings out fond memories of childhood. Simple as that.

Let's go into the details of  how woodapple jam can be prepared.

will you need

  • 400 g woodapple (make sure you buy well ripe woodapple for this)
  • 600 g sugar
  • juice of one lemon
Add 2 more tbsp of sugar if the woodapple is not very sweet

Way of make

  • Add woodapple to a bowl and add 1/2 cup of water to it and mix well.
  • Then filter he seeds, add some water to filtered seeds and mix well and filter the seeds again.
  • Now add 600 g of sugar to the woodapple bowl and dissolve it well. (If your woodapple isn't sweet enough, add a little more sugar)
  • Now cover this and keep it in the fridge overnight. It's ok if you even keep it for 24 hours.
  • Now  keep stirring this on medium heat. After 15 minutes of boiling and foaming, squeeze juice from one small lemon.
  • When it becomes thicker, switch off the flame. (since this is a thicker bottom vessel)
  • When you draw a line across the jam from top shouldn't connect with the bottom of the spoon.
  • Now take the bowl to aside and mix well with a spoon.
  • Get the boiled and dried well sterilized jam bottle. Since the jam is hot and the bottle is cold, you can't fill it right now.
  • So let the jam cool down little so you can pour it to the bottle.
  • Jam gets thicker as it cools down. When it cools down you have to pour this into the bottle as quickly as possible. If you keep it for long the jam will harden.
A recipe that can be made in home without any preservation or artificial ingredients.

This is the delicious home made woodapple jam recipe. Try it yourself and enjoy it with your loved.
