Image
Vish/Home Cooking Woodapple is fruit of the common man grown in abundance here in Sri Lanka. The ripe woodapple takes on a dark brown color. Another way to find out whether the fruit is ripe is to shake it. When i t is ripped you can eat it with sugar. The unripe woodapple is brilliant as a pickle (achcharu)with a bit of chilly powder, sugar and a pinch of salt. Woodapple is wonderful in so many ways.  Woodapple is an underutilized fruit, having many health benefits. It is a natural source of antioxidants.  Vish/Home Cooking  These ripe woodapple fruits are best for consumption and preservation. Ripe woodapples can be used to prepare fresh fruit juice or can be preserved by making woodapple jam . The method of preparation is very easy. This thick sweet concoction is absolutely ambrosial on bread, roti or anything else as a spread with a bit of butter.  For me, woodapple jam brings out fond memories of childhood. Simple as that. How to make Aluwa

Image
Aluwa Recipe...  Vish/Home Cooking Aluwa is another Sri Lankan Sweet that can be enjoyed during Sri Lankan and Tamil New Year and festivals. By making some variation in the recipe, this is available as Kaju Aluwa, Kiri Aluwa or Pani Aluwa . However, it is called, white in color and is tastier and easier to make than other traditional Sri Lankan Sweets.  The mixture needs to reach the right consistency before it can be shaped. So the hardest part of making Aluwa is actually getting the mixture to the right consistency.  If the Aluwa is medium in size, it is easier to eat and tastes better.  As a Sri Lankan I enjoy Aluwa every year. It is really soft and delicious sweet. I like to taste the different flavors of the world. A recipe of a sweet in our country is shared to give a new taste to you food lovers. Vish/Home Cooking You will need   500 g of rice of flour  500 g of sugar  200 ml of water Two tablespoons of butter Four cardamoms  Salt...
